Robyn Young is keeping her career options open, and she's the kind of kid who just may try her hand at several.
"I want to be a teacher because it would be really fun," she said. "Or, maybe a veterinarian."
Robyn is ambitious and smart. She has an "A" average at Dry Creek Elementary School in Clovis.
She's received outstanding academic achievement awards, has participated in drama and volleyball, enjoys dance and has learned to play several musical instruments.
But it's History Day that has become her big achievement. Since fourth grade, she has participated, on the individual level, in history day competitions. She has advanced to county finals three times and to the state competition twice.
Her History Day project last year was about women survivors of war in Rwanda. She earned a first-place finish at the county level and was a finalist in the state contest.
"Even as a fourth-grader, she was amazing in her dedication and willingness to work on something that was outside of school," said Linda Gillis, a resource specialist teacher at Dry Creek and Young's History Day coach for several years.
Young is proudest of her Rwanda project achievement because it showed "what women in Rwanda went through in the genocide." She is also proud of her volunteer work with the Poverello House and her role in a Christmas play at church.
