'Dog briefs: Patel and Fresno State both in third at golf tourney
Fresno State's Bhavik Patel -- who in August advanced to the semifinals of the U.S. Amateur -- is in third place individually, and his 6-under 138 on Monday helped the Bulldogs trail leaders Wichita State and host Nevada by just one stroke after two rounds of the Wolfpack Classic in Reno.
In the first men's golf tournament of the season, Patel (71-67) had an eagle and 10 birdies. Grant Doverspike (72-70) is tied for eighth at 2 under, and Adam Barkow (71-72) is tied for 10th at 1 under.
"The team's expectations are high," said coach Mike Watney, whose Bulldogs shot 8-under 568. "They feel like at the top is where they belong. It was a great overall performance."

Buckle leads Miccosukee Championship
Andrew Buckle fired a seven-under 64 on Thursday to take the first-round lead at the Miccosukee Championship, the last event on the Nationwide Tour before next week's Tour Championship.
The top 60 players on the money list after this week gain entrance into the Tour Championship next week. The top 25 players in earnings after that get their PGA Tour card for 2010 and Buckle is right in the mix.
Buckle was 28th on the money list at the beginning of this championship and if there are butterflies, he's not showing it.

Philadelphia Phillies (2-1) at Colorado Rockies (1-2), 6:07 p.m.
Cliff Lee tries to pitch the Philadelphia Phillies into the National League Championship Series for the second straight year this evening when they play Game 4 of the NLDS against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.
Lee was absolutely brilliant in winning Game 1 of this best-of-five set, as he went the distance, surrendering one run and six hits. He also struck out five without issuing a walk.
The left-hander, who took a shutout into the ninth inning, also retired 16 consecutive batters from the second inning until the seventh and became the first Phillies starter to pitch a complete game in the playoffs since Curt Schilling during Game 5 of the 1993 World Series.

Coyotes beat Ducks in shootout
Radim Vrbata helped the Phoenix Coyotes cap a banner October with another late win.
Vrbata scored in the shootout to give the Coyotes a 3-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday night.
Phoenix goalie Ilya Bryzgalov stopped Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf and Teemu Selanne in the tiebreaker to preserve the win.
Troy Corcoran grabbed his camera one afternoon and took some pictures of his dog, Sami, in the backyard.
The fifth-grader caught Sami in an award-winning pose.
"I saw Sami sitting there, and it kind of looked like my dog was smiling, so I took a picture of her," said Troy, of his Labrador-German shepherd mix dog.
Troy earned a special award of merit in photography at The Big Fresno Fair, and the 10-year-old also won four first-place awards for his baked goods.
Whether it's photography, baking, studying, singing in the choir, playing classical guitar and the piano, or playing sports, Troy gives it his all and more.
"What's unique about Troy is he tries his best in every area," said Noelle Golling, Troy's fifth-grade teacher at Harold L. Woods Elementary in Clovis.
"He's brilliant ... but he doesn't put that in kids' faces; he just wants to help them."
Troy said he's most proud of earning the Block W Award, which is the school's body/mind/spirit award, and playing on the Wolverines' football, volleyball, basketball, soccer and track teams.
Twice he earned a spot on the Clovis Junior Soccer League's all-star team.
"Troy is one of those kids who stick in your mind," said Stan Takemoto, a family friend who nominated Troy.
"He's so happy all the time; he'll brighten up a dark room."
