If Tim Anderson has trouble deciding what to do when he grows up, it won't be for a lack of options.

The 13-year-old isn't just a top student at Edison Computech, where he maintains a 4.0 grade-point average and is a member of the school's Math and Science Olympiad teams.

He's also an accomplished pianist, tuba and percussion player who has earned a first chair position with the Fresno-Madera Counties Music Educators Association's Honor Band and Honor Orchestra.

Don't forget his junior black belt in Shotokan Karate, his role as seventh-grade commissioner on the student council, or his volunteer work with Serve Fresno, the Fresno Rescue Mission, Feed Fresno and other organizations.

His secret?

"I usually multitask," the serious seventh-grader said. "Then the other thing I do is set priorities," breaking up long periods of study with more "fun" activities like laying out ideas for hydrogen-powered cars or balloon-launched gliders.

As for his future, Tim isn't sure whether he'd rather be a nuclear physicist, a neurosurgeon or -- and his mother smiled at this -- a pyrotechnic engineer.

"I like studying the atom, and the elements," he said of his interest in physics. Neurosurgery is "fascinating, how the brain is able to learn."

But it's his love of the Discovery Channel television show "MythBusters" that made him think it might also be fun to blow up things for a living.

"It's a very good show," he said.
