Thumbs up to 100 years of historic photos by Claude C. "Pop" Laval. Pop Laval was a commercial photographer who took more than 100,000 pictures, aerial photos and films of Fresno from 1911 until his death in 1966. The Pop Laval Foundation will celebrate with a fundraiser tonight, the Party of the Century at 5:30 tonight at the "Big Tent," River View Shopping Center at Friant and Fort Washington roads. Thumbs down to the University of California at Davis Medical Center, which sent a bill for $29,186 to the parents of Scott Hawkins just 10 days after the Sacramento State student was pronounced dead in the medical center's emergency room after a beating in his dormitory. Hawkins' father, already grieving the loss of his son, called the experience "devastating and insulting."Thumbs up to the Lights On Afterschool event, which took place Oct. 21-22 at Sierra Vista Mall. More than 1,000 individuals were involved, including student participants and guests. Lights On Afterschool is celebrated nationwide to call attention to the importance of afterschool programs for America's children, families and communities. The two-day Central Valley event showcased student talent, dance, art and program exhibits from more than 40 participating schools.
