Thumbs up to PG&E and the Leon S. Peters Foundation for donating $67,000 between them to replace the broken boiler at the Marjaree Mason Center Emergency Shelter for battered women and children. PG&E donated $17,000 and the Peters Foundation donated $50,000 to replace the 80-year-old boiler that heated the entire building. The new boiler was installed this week and turned on just into time for the cold weather. That's wonderful community spirit.
Thumbs up to six Madera County high school students, who each received a $500 scholarship from the Madera Division of the California Retired Teachers Association. Recipients were Aida Gaeta, Madera High; Kyler Fischer, Yosemite High; Gabriella Gutierrez, Liberty High; Alejandra Lucero, Madera Unified School District Alternative Education; Kelsey Tharp, Chowchilla High; and Eliseth Alvarez, Madera South High. The awards are given to students who plan to become teachers.
Thumbs up to Eric Bentley of Hanford West High School, who was one of two student musicians from California selected for the third annual U.S. Army All-American Marching Band. Bentley will join a group of elite marching musicians selected to perform in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl halftime show Jan. 9 at the Alamodome in San Antonio. The marching band recognizes the top 97 high school senior marching musicians from across the country and showcases their talents during the bowl game.
Thumbs up to a partnership between the city of Fresno, the Canadian city of Langford and the Brotherhood of the Badge International, a nonprofit that provides equipment for Afghan and Iraqi police officers and firefighters. The collaboration has brought four Afghan public safety officers to Fresno, where they will receive training in live firefighting, water rescue techniques and dealing with explosives with members of Fresno Police and Fire Departments.
Thumbs up to farmers Fred Machado and Errotabere Ranches, both of whom where honored by the Greater Fresno Area Chamber of Commerce. Machado was named the 2009 Agriculturist of the Year. Errotabere Ranches received the Baker, Peterson & Franklin Ag Business Award. The annual awards are given to an individual and farming company that exemplify leadership and integrity and whose achievements have significantly affected the community.
