In response to July 31 editorial on slumlords lack of accountability and how, for many Fresno City Council members, this is a nonissue. I was moved to underscore some of the more salient points that several of us found galling:
▪ Property owners on the task force can’t figure out who should pay for the inspections
▪ Councilman Steve Brandau advocates apartment owners do self-inspections.
▪ Fresno slumlords’ business model allows them to prey on low-income families and increase their profits by maintaining and fixing nothing.
▪ Councilman Clint Olivier wants to wait till we have budget for this program.
Officially, our city has known about this issue for eight months, but it’s been going on for decades. As an active member of our community, I am embarrassed and ashamed of our city leaders who, by their lack of action, have shown us who they are beholden to.
If you are looking for the answer to the slumlord problem, it’s staring you right in the face. Property owners pay and pass the costs on to tenants. It’s what other cities of comparable size do; it’s called doing the right thing.
