Is everyone in Madera County asleep at the wheel?
Vulcan Materials Co. proposed a 671-acre gravel-extraction operation near the intersection of highways 41 and 145 and the Madera County Planning Commission approved it?
How generous of Vulcan to add one eastbound lane on Highwya 145 and one southbound lane on Highway 41 (for one mile, then merge) to accommodate the 63 gravel-truck trips per hour between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. and the 37 gravel-truck trips per hour from 4-6 p.m. No mention was made of the off-peak truck traffic.
Two hundred eighty one acres of the Austin Quarry site is to be used initially for extraction. The depth of this area will reach 400 feet. The necessary blasting will further impact traffic by creating delays of up to 45 minutes on highways 41 and 145.
Why there has not been a huge outcry against this destructive project baffles me. Drive north on Interstate 5 and look east at the Granite gravel project to see what the Vulcan project will look like – a true eyesore.
