It is shocking that if the state of California and numerous other entities agree that the “R” word is a racial slur and is offensive to the first peoples of this continent – which I agree that it is – then why would The Bee find it necessary to repeat the “R” word several times in a recent article?
The “R” word carries the same weight for Native Americans as the “N” word does for African Americans. If it were the “N” word that was a mascot that had to be changed would you print the “N” word in an article? I think not.
Unless you’ve lived it and have been affected by it, you don’t understand how insulting the word is. It is not honoring. It is a slap in the face.
People, please do us all a favor and for the sake of humanity, stop using the “R” word. It is offensive. Period.
