A recent study of network news presidential candidate coverage shows that during 2015, Donald Trump has been on the air for a total of 234 minutes, while Bernie Sanders has been on air for a total of 10 minutes.
Trump alone has been covered twice as much as all the Democratic candidates combined, and time spent on Joe Biden’s decision not to run accounted for much of that. ABC News devoted 81 minutes to Trump and all of 20 seconds to Sanders. Despite this, the newest Quinnipiac poll shows The Bern trouncing Trump 52 percent to 39 percent in a hypothetical election among all likely voters.
Media coverage of the election is little more than a twisted reality-television show, with Trump as the “star.” Commercial television has given Trump center stage to embarrass the entire country because it sells, in exactly the same way Paris Hilton sold or the antics of Charlie Sheen sells.
Sanders is not getting coverage because he’s talking about issues and policy proposals and because the corporate media and corporate donors have decided Secretary Hillary Clinton is going to be the Democratic candidate. Our republic deserves better than this.
