I’m wondering if the irony is lost on Congress that there is another tragic mass shooting the same day Center for Disease Control Doctors testified before them, asking them to lift the ban on researching the causes of gun violence.
Congress has refused to fund the research for the past 20 years because the National Rifle Association fears that it would produce anti-gun propaganda. Apparently, the opinion of the NRA trumps that of Physicians with Doctors for America, National Physicians Alliance, Doctors Council, American Medical Women’s Association, American College of Preventive Medicine, The Committee of Interns and Residents, Physicians for the Prevention of Gun Violence, American Medical Student Association, and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Apparently, the NRA knows better and 30,000 Americans a year continue to die from gun shots.
Everyone needs to contact our local representatives to urge them to fund the CDC research. We also need to reinstate the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban which prohibited the manufacture, transfer and possession of 19 specific semi-automatic assault weapons, including AK-47s, AR15s, Uzis, and MAC-10s.
Thoughts and prayers are not enough. Congress needs to act now!
