There is an aggressive phone scam that has been targeting Fresnans for some time. Men representing themselves as Fresno policemen call and say that the person they are phoning has failed to answer a court summons and “will be taken into custody” unless the matter is “resolved.”
When I got such a call a month ago, before the man suggested a “resolution” I said I was calling the police, which I did, and, of course, this is a fraud. The real policeman I spoke with said that such matters are never dealt with by phone, only by mail. I don’t have caller ID so didn’t get the scammer’s number. Had I gotten it, I would have reported it to the fraud unit at the police department.
My mother recently received five such calls within 20 minutes from two men with thick Southern accents. They repeated her address and said, “How would you like it if we send a deputy out there?” unless she resolved the issue. She was shaken, and one can imagine how intimidating this can be, especially for older people.
