I commend The Bee for pointing out the interesting questions (4/20) being raised with Fresno State Professor Randa Jarrar’s Twitter comments regarding Barbara Bush upon her recent death.
Ms. Jarrar’s comments were severe, ugly and made me uncomfortable. But, her statement that Mrs. Bush was a racist caused me to reflect and think. Ms. Jarrar raised an ugly issue at a poor time. However, given the current temperature of the racist debate in this country, her comments were timed perfectly!
Had she made those remarks a few days later, no one would have paid any attention. Because she did it when she did, she made us think. And isn’t that the purpose of a professor? Isn’t that what we want at our universities? We want smart people who make us think, even if we don’t agree with the subject matter and how it’s presented.
Kudos to Ms. Jarrar, to the university for putting her on staff and to The Bee for pointing this out.
