Fresno Bee May 4 editorial: “Congressional and government investigations...failed to support charges by some Republicans that mismanagement by Secretary of State Clinton precipitated the (Benghazi) tragedy.”
True, but four of the five members of the Accountability Review Board investigating the incident were appointed by Hillary Clinton. The House Intelligence Committee examining the incident was chaired by Republican Mike Rogers, whose wife, Kristi Rogers, was president and CEO of Aegis LLC, the outfit contracted by the State Department to provide intelligence-based and physical security at Benghazi.
In view of the obvious conflicts of interest in the investigations, how can anyone take their conclusions seriously?
The second issue is Clinton’s honesty. For over a week after the incident she went along with Obama’s claim that the assault was a spontaneous reaction to an anti-Muslim video despite the fact that State was appraised in real time by Christopher Hicks that the attack was a planned and well-coordinated incursion.
The Benghazi affair is not a “phony issue” nor is it a “dead horse.” It illustrates Clinton’s lackadaisical approach to the duties of her office as well as her habitual dissembling. John Boehner is right to purse the matter.
