The night of April 13 I lost three members of my family when their home in Utah caught fire and they were unable to escape. No one ever expects a fire to break out in their home or a tragedy like this to touch their family, but it happens all too often.
I encourage everyone to take a few minutes and plan for safety in the event of a fire: Install smoke alarms and maintain them; have an escape plan and practice it; and if you can afford it, install a home sprinkler system. These steps can literally save a life.
The web page for the city of Fresno Fire Department, under the tab Smoke Alarm Program, has excellent tips on making your home safe and points out the free resources available for city residents.
Once a fire beaks out, it’s too late. A life lost is lost forever.
