I was a member of the faculty at Heald College, which recently closed, for six years.
What happened to Heald and its students is a travesty. There are very few colleges in the Valley that offer technical training, and we just lost one of the oldest. I am disappointed that California Attorney General Kamala Harris decided to put her own political ambitions and agenda ahead of the lives of the students and faculty at Heald College.
Over the six years I have taught at Heald, most of my students were the first ones in their families to graduate from college. Four of my former students are attending law school, and many others moved on to work toward their bachelor’s degrees, things that may not have happened were it not for Heald College.
Ms. Harris should have been at school today as faculty members who have taught there for 10, 15 and 20 years were told they no longer had jobs. She should have been there to console one of my students, who was crying and unsure what was going to happen. Maybe she could have looked her in the eye and explained why she was taking away her future.
