As a long time lover of baseball, I have followed the instituting of a time clock to speed up the game with interest. I do not believe the clock is needed or that it will speed up the games.
My interest in baseball goes back to my boyhood in the 1950s. Even then there were complaints about how long the games took. I noticed that all of the complaints seemed to come from the baseball writers. This was when there was one televised game per week. That was the only game you got to see without buying a ticket.
The writers got to (or had to) go to every game, free. They actually were paid to go to the game. I suppose like any other job, getting off early was desired. When I was able to buy a ticket, I wanted every game to go extra innings. Play all night! Like Ernie Banks said, “Lets play two.”
Remember doubleheaders? Five or six hours of baseball!
Never miss a local story.
What’s the rush? Where would you rather be than at the ballgame?
