I was very heartened, even excited, to read The Bee editorial March 2 about the major companies that have severed ties with the National Rifle Association and the action that Walmart and Dick’s Sporting Goods have taken, like increasing the minimum age for buying guns.
The students of the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Feb.14 have started a chain reaction that is cause for optimism. After so many, too many, gun tragedies, we’ve been on the precipice of a change that has never materialized. Lawmakers fail to act and the national conversation fades.
But this time something is different. The students, who saw their friends and teachers struck down, organized and are speaking out in the national media. Private citizens and businesses are not just demanding change, but are taking effective action on their own creating a snowball effect.
The NRA is powerful, but that doesn’t mean it will be impervious to sustained pressure and action from those who want sensible gun control laws. Think David and Goliath and support the process however you can.
