If you have ever doubted the quality of life in the Valley, you need to rethink that doubt. I attended the Hands Across the Valley Volunteer of the Year event. A total of 128 individuals from five counties were nominated in 11 categories.
Each one could have been selected “Volunteer of the Year.” They all give of their time, energy, talent and hearts — freely and willingly. They represent every ethnic, socio-economic and educational level. They span generations from teenagers to seniors. They work alone or in groups seeking to improve the common good. These volunteers give to their communities because they believe an individual can make a difference. And they make a difference every day.
There are more beautiful places to live and there are better climates to enjoy. There are more economically advantaged communities. But you will not find five counties anywhere in this country that are more generous with their time and talents.
The central San Joaquin Valley truly is “God’s Country.” I am proud to live here and honored to live among the many volunteers who improve our area with their selfless good works. Thank you, volunteers. You are my heroes!
