The Fresno County Board of Supervisors got it right. Now, it needs to work with a range of partners to make it last.
The board recently voted to provide specialty health care for undocumented residents. These residents deserve it. They work hard to produce so much regional wealth via the ag industry; they deserve better health.
If we want ag to stay strong, we need to work on a long-term solution that includes the county, state leaders, local hospitals and many others. The county has taken a major step and there is legislation pending in Sacramento.
Meanwhile, hospitals, like Community Regional Medical Center, can provide more services through the community-benefits model, which obligates non-profit hospitals to offer services because they don’t generally pay federal, state or local tax.
We have a temporary solution. Let’s make it permanent.
