Regarding the water crisis: We just don’t need to conserve, we need new sources of water. With our long coastline, and the eighth largest economy in the world, there really is no reason why we should not be doing the same things that Australia, Israel, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait are doing. Namely, building desalination plants.
If the climate scientists are correct, we will need them because this may be the new normal. People who think we can “conserve” our way through this are unrealistic. Why? Because you can’t conserve what you don’t have enough of. Right now, we have very little snow in the mountains, which means very little water in spring and summer. “Changing our lifestyles” and “cutting usage” ring hollow when there isn’t even enough to ensure the population can meet its basic necessities.
For those of you beating up on farmers, last time I checked food and being able to produce it fall into the category of basic necessities! Do you know what doesn’t? Green grass, artificial ponds and lakes in our parks, fountains in our government courtyards and businesses, and the millions of gallons wasted building a new train!
