When I was a child, I was taught to not play in the street. I played in our yard, school playground or local park.
I am witnessing a social change that once again demonstrates impeding the development of common sense and teaches entitlement. Our neighborhood school has a huge school playground and numerous planned playgrounds. However, several families choose to place “child at play” safety signs in the middle of the road so that their children can play in the street.
Several weeks ago, I needed to drive down one of these streets with yards empty and children playing in the street. One child demonstrated his common sense by remaining in the road and holding onto the child-safety sign instead of getting out of the street.
It is unfortunate that their parents are putting their lives at risk by teaching them they are safe to play in the street instead of playing in their yard, the neighborhood school yard or the two playgrounds that are less than half a block in two directions from their homes.
When I talked to one of the mothers about my concerns, she responded to my by saying I should take another route.
