In response to the death of Victor E. Bulldog II, I would like to point out that I believe the placement of this announcement was fitting to honor him. He was a much beloved dog in a town that is primarily a college town.
I have spent my life here, and I cannot remember a store that does not display a Bulldogs pennant, merchandise or a “proud supporter of Fresno State” sign in our town. The estimated population in 2013 was around 509,000 people. Of that 509,000, about 22,500 were college students at that time and the fan base is even larger. I remember having a difficult time buying season passes because they were selling out within the first few weeks of this semester!
Victor was not just a mascot or an icon, he was a member of our Bulldog family. When your pet suddenly dies, don’t you announce the news to your family? The Bee was announcing his loss.
The rest of the world didn’t stop because this was posted to the front page. No, we mourned the loss of our pet and moved on. RIP Victor, may heaven bring you many bones to chew on for eternity.
Never miss a local story.
