The Fresno High historic neighborhood has been my family’s home since 1973. We have been part of a community that has fought to preserve a neighborhood that is filled with historic homes and iconic Fresno landmarks.
Community members have been active in successful campaigns to raise the quality of neighborhood schools and have supported businesses like Cobb’s Hardware, Jensen and Pilegard, restaurants and shops. We revel in the rebirth of Gazebo Gardens as it transformed from a world-class nursery by day into a community gathering place for food, music and fun by night.
However, there is no denying the blight in this community that continues to worsen. This blight deters new families from choosing to invest their futures here and threatens to send longtime residents packing. So, as one of many loyal community residents, I say hello City Hall! Yes to Smart and Final, yes to more low-cost food options for the neighborhood, yes to sound investors, and a new in-fill building on a decaying commercial corridor. What community wouldn’t rather seize this opportunity than keep useless, decaying, graffiti-ridden buildings while plans are debated to infinity by people who don’t live, work, or shop around this corner?
Never miss a local story.
