In my essay (March 1) on the McFarland cross-country team, I forgot to mention that my lengthy 1997 Los Angeles Times story was the first “national” story on the coach, his boy runners and their unlikely string of state championships.
In fact, the local Kern County press had written even earlier pieces about the team’s success in its own backyard. One of those stories, by then Bakersfield Californian reporters Marc Benjamin and Doug Church, was particularly well done.
I came it across it the other day and was reminded of its ambition. In all the hooray for the movie, it, too, has been overlooked. Marc, might I add, has long since made his mark at The Bee.
Never miss a local story.
