Thank you for the March 7 Valley Voices column by Tom Snyder. Eighteen years ago, I was assigned to do my initial student teaching at Baird Middle School. When I walked in to meet my master teacher, I met the smiling Tom Snyder. His first question was, “Do you play the guitar?” I laughed and said that I did. He then said that we would get along just fine.
Every week we played tunes from the Beatles on our guitars and even changed up the wording to make the content come alive. That whole semester Tom taught me how to connect with students, how a smile could brighten a kid’s day and how music could inspire the creative spirit. I learned that the guitar was a better teaching tool than a Smartboard would ever be. Thank you for setting the tone of my teaching career.
