It’s not often one sees a person take pride in willful ignorance but, in his letter of Feb. 27, Tim Spangler happily presents us with this sorry spectacle. Instead of studying the overwhelming evidence for evolution, he prefers to loose a barrage of nonsensical attacks on those who have their eyes wide open to reality rather than, I presume, the blinkered view of certain books composed of myths and fairy tales.
Charles Darwin’s theory does not depend solely on the fossil record, as Mr. Spangler seems to think. When one considers the way species are distributed across the planet, molecular biology, both the obvious and subtle interrelationships that run throughout the living world — just to name a few aspects — fossils prove to be merely the frosting on the cake of evolution.
As for scientists trying to change “the narrative,” Mr. Spangler clearly displays his lack of understanding. Of course the fossil record is “transitional!” No rational evolutionary biologist has ever claimed otherwise! Plus, he seems to believe that scientific knowledge is permanently carved upon stone tablets. J.B.S. Haldane succinctly summed up what it would take for him to reject evolution: “Fossil rabbits in the Pre-Cambrian.”
