Because of the ongoing drought and a future of uncertain water availability, we should:
• Require new construction to use drought-tolerant plants and drip irrigation, and ban grass lawns.
Never miss a local story.
• Promote xeriscaping (which can be very attractive) for public spaces as well as private homes.
• Require high water users such as golf courses and agriculture to use reclaimed water whenever possible.
• Support the removal of existing lawns with a lawn-removal rebate program and stop homeowner associations from requiring front lawns.
I have written to our local city council members and urge everyone to do the same. We live in a desert and it is time we act like it.
