Rene Lastreto Sr. (letter Feb. 23), with 45 years in the poultry and egg business, dutifully informs us that: “Enabling the birds to stretch their wings or legs has not shown any scientific difference in the welfare of the egg-producing birds.”
Now, it may be that contemporary neurological research could implant electrodes in Mr. Lastreto’s noggin demonstrating that he actually found pleasure in seeing a sunset or smelling a rose, but I doubt that that could have been scientifically proven 50 years ago.
As well, there may be no scientific proof in my hunch that there are millions of caged chickens cackling their gratitude that Mr. Lastreto is gone from the industry, but take a gander at the documentary “Fowl Play” and see if you might agree.
