In regard to the Feb. 17 online article on the problems at Fort Miller Middle School, it should be noted that Fort Miller has been ignored for years. When Cooper became an IB feeder, it effectively segregated the Fresno High feeders with one school for the elite whose parents had the awareness to apply, and the other school (Fort Miller) for everyone else.
A quick look at the school accountability report card shows that Cooper spends $2,000 more per student and has 600 students across three grade levels while Fort Miller has over 800 in just 7th and 8th. Even the unrestricted basic funding is $900 higher per student. Cooper has six academic counselors, Fort Miller has none.
What did we expect? Cooper was set up to succeed and good for them and those kids. But what is happening at Fort Miller is inexcusable. It has been ignored and that reflects poor planning on the district’s part and poor oversight by our school board.
