Concerning the Feb. 5 and Feb. 11 letters on panhandlers, has anyone thought why this is a problem today?
A few years back, the City of Fresno scattered the homeless all over town. This created a whole new set of problems.
Residential complexes (ours is at Shields and West avenues) have problems like businesses, with homeless people going through the garbage and making messes. They are sleeping in every nook and cranny they can find. We see them on the corners asking for money.
Not being near the shelters downtown, they need money to survive when they may have been able to get services from the shelters and organizations that help the homeless.
Never miss a local story.
They are living where money is needed to survive without the shelters and services they need. These are provided if they comply with their rules.
What is needed is a safe and legal campground. Watch how fast they disappear if this was to be accomplished. On Dec. 28, 2011, “Big Sue” died across the street from Holy Cross Center for Women. For this exact cause, the campground could be named after her. She had the respect of Mayor Alan Autry and was appointed to one of his homeless committees. Why not?
