In response to a letter (Feb. 8) expressing anger at “evolution superstition,” I checked out the two books suggested in that letter that somehow “disprove” the whole idea of evolution. Stephen Meyers, the author of both, has an advanced degree in philosophy. While that entitles him to be called “Doctor,” it does not confer expertise on the Cambrian fossil record nor on cellular physiology. Both books are religious tomes and are abysmally uninformed on the science Dr. Myers so glibly attacks.
In doing my homework, I came upon a website, BioLogos.org, founded by a real scientist, Francis Collins, the head of the National Institutes of Health and former head of the Human Genome Project. Dr. Collins is a devout and thoughtful Christian and accepts evolution as one of the many ways by which God achieves His purposes. Most contributors to this website are both working scientists and active Christians who accept the reality of evolution. It’s worth taking a look at by those who insist that science and Christianity are necessarily at odds.
