I believe in freedom. This must include the freedom to choose poorly and to suffer the consequences and/or reap the rewards.
I am against forcing people. I am for educating people. If we force, we end up with no thinking and no responsibility. If we educate, we will end up with the majority making best choices, because they will be responsible for the consequences. We err when we shield people from their consequences, even though it may make us “feel good.”
This goes for every aspect of our lives, including our health. There are exceptions, such as the mentally incompetent, but exceptions do not nullify the main concept. They are simply another challenge. Any law should use force and incentive as an absolute last resort.
Our system is not “majority rules,” because this is unfair to the minority. Our officials are supposed to be choosing what is best to protect all rights, especially those of the minority. If a law does not pass this test, it should fail automatically. That’s what a representative republic is all about.
