Whenever there is an environmental disaster as ExxonValdez or BP Gulf spill, the news is full of information and sad pictures of pitiful oil-soaked sea birds, otters or seals.
I am wondering why there isn’t more news on what has been going on in Appalachia for many years by Big Coal. That is mountain-top removal. This is more devastating and longer lasting than the all the other disasters put together. And the life threatening consequences and lives destroyed by the killing of the forests and wildlife, the slurry covering homes even towns, the damage to the health of the poor sickly people who live there, and it is forever.
Big Coal owns the politicians and perhaps controls how much news gets out. Who are the politicians in these states? How much do they get from the coal industry?
I know National Geographic and the environmental magazines do their best to get the story out, but two weeks ago, I mentioned mountain-top removal and got blank looks from the group I was talking with. Wake up, America, or stop singing “America the Beautiful.”
Never miss a local story.
