The article, “Obama calls for spending surge” (Jan. 30), failed to talk about our national debt. Our national debt is fast approaching $18 trillion. That is about $180,000 per taxpayer.
Deficits are the amount we spend more than we take in on an annual basis; debt is the accumulation of deficits over time. We would call deficits “running up the credit card.” Right now our national credit card is maxed out. Congress suspended our credit card limit for a period to allow our economy to heal from the 2008 recession.
I don’t think it’s time to think about deficits. We need to balance our budget like every American family has to do. Who knows when the next 2008 will come or when we will have to enter another war?
