I’m responding to the article in The Bee on Jan. 28 regarding the apparent improper use of Proposition 63 funds. The money is supposed to help the mentally ill who are often the homeless we see on our streets. Because of their illness and the lack of oversight, they are often not medicated properly and can act irrationally, which often leads to arrests and incarceration at cost to the taxpayers.
“There is a better way to help the folks who live with mental illness,” a commentary in The Bee on Jan. 24 by Dennis Torigian, talked about an excellent model on which the money could be better spent.
Mr. Torigian has had 20 years of experience with his nonprofit organization. Our county and state officials should take note of his website www.hassfresno.org as a way to extend this model with the use of money from Proposition 63. It would help the lives of our most vulnerable citizens by taking them off the streets and out of jail and saving the taxpayers money as well.
