Property-tax day is creeping up on us.
I’ve paid property taxes that provide for schools, etc. since the middle of the 1960s. Even with Proposition 13, the costs go up, obviously. As I’m now in my mid-70s, my financial assets are going down. The possibility of losing my home for insufficient funds at some stage of my life is not a neurosis but a reality.
I’ve worked since my teens and the total amount of time I haven’t worked is probably less than three or four years maximum. The powers that be should consider, even if grudgingly, that at a certain age, perhaps 70-plus and possibly at a certain income status, the property tax would begin to go down by the same percent it goes up that year.
I look at where my property tax monies go, highly paid administrators, etc., and I get a pit in my stomach over the lack of control. Anyone out there with the same sense of dread?
Never miss a local story.
