Thanks and congratulations to The Bee’s editorial board for expressing strong support for the Wolk-Monning Bill called “The End of Life Option Act” (Jan. 22).
The usual opponents have neither good evidence to support their groundless fears of a slippery slope nor sound religious basis in opposing it. Even if they did have a sound religious basis, no person’s religion should be a rule of life or death for any person who does not accept that religion. And, of course, in this free country, people are free to accept or not accept any religion.
Much as California needs an Oregon-style law, desperately and hopelessly ill people need and will continue to need knowledge of quick, painless, non-gruesome and non-violent ways to end their suffering. This knowledge is imparted by an organization called Final Exit Network. Volunteers trained by this organization will also provide a compassionate presence, if desired, with suffering people who voluntarily choose to end their suffering through a hastened death.
