I would like to respond to Congressman Jeff Denham’s Jan. 17 Sacramento Bee op-ed concerning high-speed rail.
I am a disabled veteran who owns a small business in Fresno. I have been awarded the Hazardous Remediation portion of the first phase through Fresno. I was born in Fresno and worked on the family farm until I went into the military. I voted for the project without knowing I would be working on it in the future. What Denham does not take into account is, we can not completely rely on farming for our economy. Diversity is necessary for any business or community to survive. We are building the HSR for the future of this area and our state.
Because of this wonderful opportunity, I want to help those in need. I have chosen to hire 90% of new employees from Cal-Works or welfare to work. This has given good men a chance to learn a trade and support their families. What they needed was a leg up, not a handout. I have hired 25 guys from this program.
Not having any HSR in the United States is amazing. Having it start in Fresno is a blessing.
