I get so frustrated when I read letters to the editor like the Jan. 20 letter from Joyce Orr.
She complains that by not hearing a case the U.S. Supreme Court put smelt above human life. The vast majority of scientists have determined that the smelt are the aquatic equivalent of the proverbial canary in a coal mine. When the smelt go away, humanity will begin the process of going away.
By protecting the smelt, we are protecting the long-run survival of humanity.
