I received my ballot to vote on the water fee increase along with an entertaining pitch for a yes vote. I found the fee structure unfair and the need and costs unnecessary.
First, the quantity rate charge is the same for all users. Shouldn’t the irrigation and fire cost more? Second, the meter charge per month is more for the homeowner than all other users on all pipe sizes. Third, the allocated amount for the groundwater recharge is only $6.4 million, which amounts to 1/67th of the total amount being sought. I thought that the groundwater aquifer dropping was the big problem and we needed lots of recharge.
It appears that the real issue is continued build-out of the city and a subsidy given to the developers. If the deal is so good, then they should just build the water plant and add the costs to the new homes, offices and other structures. Currently the city of Fresno receives less than what is needed for police, fire and schools from these same developers. I don’t mind paying my fair share. I just do not want to give them my money. Vote no!
