Does the general public really care about the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday?
Every year, The Bee has a story of a march in downtown Fresno with a few hundred folks, mostly African-Americans, then that is it.
March and April comes around, the baseball stadiums are loaded with people. Clovis is packed on Big Hat Days along with functions at Fresno State.
Most folks recognize the works of Dr. King, but when you drive around the Valley, there are few landmarks named after him. The holiday is almost a day of grieving and not a day to be happy. Perhaps that is the reason it is a revered day.
Never miss a local story.
