Two days after I saw the movie about the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, “Selma” I connected two powerful social concepts.
What do racism and global warming deniers have in common? Their actions protect the rich and powerful. Racist politicians keep white underdogs poor with propaganda that makes poor, hungry, white people have one thing: They think they are better than black people. Thus, the rich don’t have to take care of either group, just exploit them. For example, scapegoating works.
Top corporate chief executive officers who rely on cheap petroleum for their for quarterly profit reports must lie about global warming, because if they do not produce stockholder profits, then the wealthy stockholders will replace them with executives who do produce those profits.
You can do something special. Before Feb.13, Global Divestment Day, take a photo of your anti-petroleum group on steps of your town hall; the congregation of your church; academics and students gathered in front of the most recognizable part of your university campus; a sports team on the field; or a group of doctors and nurses in front of a hospital logo or entrance. Request your alma mater, city, and church divest petroleum stocks.
Never miss a local story.
Corporations are people? Yes, sociopathic people.
