I’ve read Fresno’s proposed water-rate increases. Yes, we have to resolve our groundwater overdraft and contamination, and repair or replace aging pipes. But the proposed fee structure benefits commercial interests and unfairly burdens homeowners.
If the rate increases go into effect, beginning in March the “All Others” (which I take to mean businesses) rate for water will be lowered to equal that of a single=family home, and their meter charge will be less per month than a home by 2018.
As their water costs progressively increase over time (but at a rate less than a single=family home), a business will pass these increased costs to customers in higher prices. However, as a retired homeowner, I have no one to pass any increases onto; it just adds another hit to my limited budget. I have the option not to buy their product; I don’t have a choice in paying my water bill.
I’m willing to pay to pay my fair share, but everyone should have to pay at least the same as a single-family home. And definitely not less.
Never miss a local story.
I’ve been undecided on whether to protest the proposed increases. I think I’m now decided.
