It was recently estimated that a ride on the high-speed rail ride from Fresno to Sacramento would cost between $80 to $100 per person.
For that money, my wife and I could drive to Sacramento and back, park and do sight-seeing and enjoy a good lunch and dinner. Most people would opt to drive.
HSR makes sense and may even be profitable to transport commuters between mega regions like the Northeast corridor in the U.S. that serves 200 million commuters over 475 miles of tracks. The only area that makes sense in California for HSR is from San Francisco to Los Angeles and possibly San Diego. Sacramento to Fresno to LA just does not make economic sense.
It is unfortunate that while I won’t travel in California by HSR, I will be forced to support it through additional state taxes.
