After reading Hanna Fufaro’s article regarding Fresno Unified School District violating special education laws and the response of the Fresno Teachers Association president on the lack of parent complaint, I wish I could say I was incensed, but that would be a euphemism.
When I was chair of the Community Advisory Committee for FUSD years ago, this issue was brought up repeatedly. The attempts at collaboration by the district, parents and outside agencies showed that this was an area of critical need, and it was a problem that was fixable. That was six years ago.
Who didn’t show up to those meetings and/or dialogues? Oh yeah, that’s right, the Fresno Teachers Association leadership. Speech and language pathologists who were part of management, and of course, members of FTA’s own Special Education Committee. While I chafe at Ms. Golden’s (the district’s spokesperson) comments, I find that it is grossly affronting that the FTA president made a statement that we, as parents of children who need speech services, are not complaining, much less trying to fix the problem. We know it’s a violation, but rather than run straight to the OAH, we want to fix it.
