The biggest issue for Fresno County in 2015 is the Board of Supervisors itself.
With regard to the General Plan, the board needs to know what its job is – to acquaint itself with and then to supervise all 176 General Plan programs. The board needs to comply with adopted policies and state laws, beginning with the requirement to conduct annual assessments of plan implementation.
The board needs to embrace its critics. How utterly discouraging it was for me on Dec. 2 to entreat the board to comply with state laws only to have Fresno’s Chief of Police Jerry Dyer open the meeting with this invocation, “Father, there’s no shortage of critics, and we pray that you will give them [the board] the endurance and the stamina to be able to withstand those critics...In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
Finally, The Bee needs to take the board to task for not doing its job, and the voters need to stop electing people incapable of addressing severe countywide problems such air pollution, water shortage and chronic unemployment.
But it will be business as usual in 2015, and none of these concerns will be addressed. Now that’s the issue, isn’t it?
