It is hard to pick just one galling mistake made by the Fresno County Board of Supervisors. There have been so many:
• Mental health facility.
• Political feuds with the sheriff, Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, coroner’s office and the assessor.
• And don’t forget the reversal of the high-speed rail support.
• The one that gets me the most is the wage cuts and furloughs that the county did to its workers. The board said that times were tough, and the workers had to take cuts so the county could get by. The cuts were selective — only certain workers were hit by the cuts, and some workers got their wages returned far more quickly than others.
• The county violated state labor laws in the cuts with the district attorney’s office and has to return all back pay. I predict the courts will force the county to reinstate all the cuts and back pay eventually for all other employees affected.
I hope the new board reinstates employee salaries and makes a good-faith offer on back pay.
