When the attorneys for murder defendants successfully challenge the objectivity of the sheriff/coroner, who will pick up the outside coroner’s expenses?
Will the $50,000 in annual savings be enough to cover this? Meanwhile, the Fresno County supervisors have turned back a grant for additional funding for the assessor to do his duly-elected job of making sure everyone is paying his or her share of property taxes.
It’s unlikely that the public defender or the courts will have extra funds to ensure a defendant’s right to a fair trial with an unbiased coroner. This idea seems very short-sighted and is likely to cost taxpayers more than it would save. How about combining the sheriff’s office with the Fresno police department instead?
