This is in response to a reader's question about weird "thunder" heard recently in Madera, which appeared in the April 7 "Ask Angelo" column.
If your reader heard the same sound I heard, it wasn't thunder. I, too, heard a very loud "boom, boom" noise, and after wandering around my neighborhood for awhile trying to figure out where it was coming from, I phoned the police department. I was told that they were pounding poles into the ground at Gateway Avenue and Highway 99. I assume they were using a pile driver, which takes a lot of energy and produces a heap big noise!
I'm guessing my house is about three miles from that location. If I could hear it inside my well-insulated house, what must that kind of noise do to the workers who are actually at the site?
Never miss a local story.
