"Fresno State lands a fortunate event" said The Bee headline [March 26]. Yes, kudos to the university. The headline refers to Daniel Handler, better known as Lemony Snicket, the author of "A Series of Unfortunate Events," about the three Baudelaire orphans, Violet, Klaus and Sunny, who manage to cleverly escape the many traps set by the unscrupulous Count Olaf who is after their fortune.
Handler spoke at the University Lecture Series on March 27 to a capacity crowd of children and adults. He used the clever and witty dialogue for which he is known in his writing, with a little self-deprecating humor thrown in, to keep a multi-generational audience laughing and engaged for an hour. It was wonderful to see both children and adults lined up afterward to ask him questions.
We thank Provost Jeri Echeverría and Dr. Dianne Dickerson for having the courage to bring a children's author to Fresno for the University Lecture Series. I hope that the success of "An Evening with Daniel Handler" will encourage them to invite other children's authors.
